Wednesday October 11 - Tangier, Morocco
Today's adventures take us into the heart of Tangier, The Kasba (Fort), The Medina (Old City) and to the outer reaches of the metropolis occupied by Castles and Palaces dating back centuries. We were fortunate once again to find a friendly and knowledgeable tour guide to escort us through the labyrinth of streets and alleys of the Kasba and surrounding environs.
Breakfast in Tangier
Our affable guide Abdul is a native of Tangier and educated in Spain in the field of economics.

Promontory overlook of King Mohammed VI (current ruler) Palace. Morocco is now a constitutional monarchy, and has a 1,200+ year history of peaceful cohabitation by Muslims, Catholics and Jews alike.
We hired a car and driver and explored the coastline outside of the city. The beaches stretch nonstop for 30 miles around the southern coast of Morrocco. Along the roadway are camel rentals for rides on the beach. We decided to pass on the camel rides, but they do provide a great photo-op.
Then back into the car for a drive to the Kasba and Medina to explore the markets.
The pungent aroma wafting from the spice market fills the air.
Figs, Dates and Nuts comprise the local staples
Beautify doorways adorn nearly every street.
We stopped for refreshments and to view some Moroccan carpets at Abdul's cousin's shop in the Medina. Since we just sold our house in NC we don't have room for any carpets but will certainly return once we have settled in to our new home. The quality and craftsmanship ranges from rudimentary to regal. The three-knot silk carpets were truly magnificent, and by US standards very affordable.
Tina couldn't resist and left with a number of purchases for their home in Colorado.
Next stop Almeria Spain!
